As much as your dogs depend on you, sadly, you cannot list them as dependents on your tax return. However, under certain circumstances, you can deduct the cost of their care.

Service animals and medical expenses

If you have a service dog for a legitimate medical purpose, the IRS allows you to deduct various costs, such as training, supplies (collars, leashes, vests), food, grooming, and health care. To file this, your dog must be officially certified and you will need documentation from your physician explaining how your dog helps treat your diagnosed mental or physical condition.

Some examples of potentially tax deductible service dogs include those that assist with visual, hearing, and mobility impairments, seizure disorders, diabetes, autism, and mental health conditions.
